In 1998, it consumed 80,000 to 100,000 tons of rigid foam plastics, with 15% used as thermal insulation materials for oil pipelines, chemical storage tanks, and industrial equipment. The construction industry is another major application field for rigid polyurethane foam plastics. In 2000, the construction industry consumed over 70,000 tons of rigid PUR foam plastics. Due to the rapid development of China's construction industry, foam plastics used for building insulation, sound absorption, decorative materials, and prefabricated houses account for 10%; those used as thermal insulation materials in transportation account for 10%; and others account for 7.5%, among which furniture, clothing, and bicycles have relatively large consumption.

　　In addition, the development of China's automobile and motorcycle industries has also provided a broad market for molded flexible PUR foam plastics. According to experts' predictions, due to polyurethane's excellent plasticity and practical material properties, its application in automobiles is increasingly expanding. It is expected that in 2005, the demand for polyurethane in China's automobile industry (excluding Taiwan Province) will reach 44,100 tons, including 30,400 tons consumed by cars and jeeps, 3,000 tons by heavy-duty cars, 7,200 tons by light vehicles, and 500 tons by mini-cars, with an average consumption of 14.71 kg per vehicle.

　　Polyurethane foam plastic is the most important polyurethane product, with a wide range of uses and excellent performance: flexible PUR foam plastic and semi-rigid PUR foam plastic are mainly used in furniture cushioning and decorative materials, automotive padding, carpet underlay, clothing lining, building sound-absorbing materials, sports padding, as well as mattresses and instrument packaging materials. Among them, molded flexible polyurethane foam plastic is mainly used for car seat cushions, motorcycle and bicycle seats, etc.; while rigid polyurethane foam plastic is mainly used as thermal insulation material in the refrigerator and cold storage industry, accounting for 57.5% of the total consumption of rigid foam plastic.
